Program Overview  

Students begin with Medical Administrative Assistant – Part A, focusing on front-office operations and electronic health record (EHR) skills. After completing Part A, students may stop and sit for the Certified Medical Administrative Assistant (CMAA) and/or Certified Electronic Health Records Specialist (CEHRS) certification exams, or, continue to Medical Assistant Clinical Procedures – Part B to gain hands-on clinical skills and complete a supervised clinical rotation.

Students who complete both Part A and Part B will be eligible to sit for the Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CMA) credential exam with National Healthcareer Association (NHA).

This program is ideal for students pursuing careers in healthcare administration, clinical patient care, or a combination of both.

Medical Administrative Assistant – Part A (Course 1)

This course focuses on the administrative side of healthcare and prepares students to work in medical office environments.  

Topics include: 

  • Medical office management 
  • Medical records and documentation 
  • Electronic Health Records (EHR) 
  • Scheduling and patient intake 
  • Insurance and billing processes 
  • Legal, ethical, and regulatory requirements 
  • Professional communication in a medical office  

Students will learn to manage patient information and complete required software tasks following a patient visit from start to finish. 

Format:
16-week online*, asynchronous (self-guided)

A mandatory orientation will be held on the first day of class from 4:00–6:00 p.m. on the Caswell County Campus. Students who are not local may attend virtually via Zoom. The Zoom link will be included in the Welcome email sent the day before the course begins.

All remaining coursework is 100% online.

Certification Preparation: 
This curriculum is approved by the National Healthcareer Association (NHA) and prepares students to sit for: 

Students who continue on to MED-3300 – Medical Assisting Clinical Procedures Part B are not required to take the CMAA or CEHRS exams. Upon successful completion of MED-3300 Part B, students will sit for the Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) exam, which supersedes both the CMAA and CEHRS credentials.

Students who choose to complete only the Medical Administrative Assistant Part A course will be required to sit for the CMAA and/or CEHRS certification exam(s).

Time Commitment: 
Students have 24/7 access to the course and may work at their own pace. PCC recommends 16 hours per week to complete the course by the scheduled end date. 

Instructor support is available via email, phone, or scheduled Zoom sessions.

Program Eligibility & Requirements

  • High school diploma or high school equivalency
  • Basic computer skills are encouraged
  • This is a rigorous course; students are strongly encouraged to review the course brochure before registering 

Medical Assistant Clinical Procedures – Part B (Course 2)

This course introduces foundational clinical skills used in ambulatory and outpatient healthcare settings. 

Topics include: 

  • Patient care and safety Vital signs 
  • Medical terminology 
  • Infection control 
  • Basic clinical procedures 
  • Assisting with patient examinations 
  • Clinical documentation within the EHR system 


Format: 
16-Week Hybrid Course  

Course Structure: 

  • Weeks 1–8 (Person County Campus): 
    • Face-to-Face Classroom/Lab:
      Wednesdays, 8–11 a.m. or 6–9 p.m. (students choose one time slot) 
      Online coursework: 15 hours per weeks
  • Weeks 9–16: 
    • Clinical Site Orientation & BLS Healthcare Provider certification 
    • Clinical rotation at an approved site (140 clinical hours)

Course Capacity:  
Enrollment is limited to 15 students

Certification Preparation: 
Approved by the National Healthcareer Association (NHA) to prepare students for the Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) Exam.

Program Eligibility & Requirements 
(Medical Assistant Clinical Procedures – Part B)

Students must meet one of the following: 

  • Successful completion of OST-2800 Part A or equivalent, or 
  • Five years of current employment experience (resume required) and be required to pass credit by exam, or 
  • Current CMAA certification 
     

Students who did not complete OST-2800 or equivalent course at PCC must email an unofficial transcript to Lori Watlington to request an exemption.

This program is offered through Continuing Education and is not eligible for FAFSA. Students are responsible for payment unless approved funding is obtained (see below).
