Piedmont Community College (PCC) has many short-term courses that offer certification and the possibility for a career change or advancement. The following courses begin in the month of January that could position someone with the opportunity to obtain new employment. COMPUTERS & INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY:

Microsoft Office Specialist: Excel Associate

Students will learn the skills needed to get the most out of Microsoft Excel 2019 by demonstrating competency in the fundamentals of creating and managing worksheets and workbooks, creating cells and ranges, creating tables, applying formulas and functions, and creating charts and objects.

Microsoft Office Specialist: PowerPoint Associate

Students will learn to create, edit, and enhance presentations and slideshows. This certification also measures competency to create and manage presentations, insert and format shapes and slides, create slide content, apply transitions and animations, and manage multiple presentations.

Computer Programming: Java SE 8 Oracle (Part 1)

This is Part 1 of 2 courses designed to prepare students to become an Oracle Certified Associate Java SE 8 Programmer. The courses help students build a foundational understanding of the latest Java technology and qualify for the Java SE Programmer I exam (1ZO-808).

ADVANCED MANUFACTURING & CONSTRUCTION:

HVAC – Air Conditioning

This course focuses on the fundamentals of the HVAC industry with a particular focus on the certification exam. Upon completion, you should be able to demonstrate knowledge of refrigerants, be prepared for the EPA certification examinations, and obtain your refrigerant license.

Basic Welding I

This course will introduce welding safety, fundamentals, and techniques of shielded metal arc welding (SMAW) also known as stick welding.

Certified Production Technician

This training offers industry-recognized credentials designed by the Manufacturing Skills Standards Council and extends certificates in the following areas: Safety Awareness; Manufacturing Processes; Quality Practices; Maintenance Awareness; OSHA-10 Safety certification. Local industries, such as Polywood, GKN Driveline, and Spuntech Industries Inc. are guaranteeing interviews to students who successfully complete this program.

HEALTH CARE:

Nurse Aid I

Prepare to work under the supervision of licensed nursing professionals while performing nursing care and services for persons of all ages. Topics include growth and development, personal care, vital signs, communication, nutrition, therapeutic activities, family resources and services, and employment skills. Upon completion, you may be eligible for listing as a Nurse Aide I.

  • $189 registration fee + textbook, and state board exam fees with scholarship funding available

Nurse Aid Refresher

The Refresher course is for the CNA whose certification has expired within the past 2 years or who is currently certified in another state and seeks listing on the North Carolina Nurse Aide I Registry.

EMT Initial

This course provides the basic knowledge and skills needed to deliver Basic Life Support (BLS) care and is required to progress on to more advanced levels of prehospital patient care.

EMT Online (Continuing Education): Infectious Diseases

The Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) online Con Ed program is designed to continue emergency medical training at a basic level.  Courses can be used to maintain First Responder, EMR, and EMT certifications.  These courses will also be available at your local fire department/ rescue squad.

Phlebotomy Technician

Gain skills is theory and clinical experiences in the proper collection of blood and other specimens used for diagnostic testing. When you complete this program, you should be able to safely perform procedures necessary for specimen collections on patents in various health care settings and may be eligible for national certification as phlebotomy technicians.

Medical Coding and Billing (Part I & II) (scholarships available)

This online medical coding and billing program trains you in the specialized skills needed to assign the standardized codes used to bill for healthcare services. This course is delivered in two parts.

Medical Administrative Assistant with EHR (Career Step)

Approved by the National Healthcareer Association, Career Step’s curriculum includes training on Microsoft Office software and prepares you to pass the Certified Medical Administrative Assistant (CMAA) exam. With Career Step’s affordable tuition, you get a quality online education with one-on-one support from dedicated instructors and graduate support advisors.

BLS-CPR for Healthcare Providers

This CPR course is designed for healthcare providers or those entering the healthcare field.

Gunsmithing Tool Making

Gain skills in the areas of refurbishing metal and wood into firearms, manufacturing gunsmithing tools, diagnosing malfunctions for repairs in guns, and more.

Gunsmithing Part I

This course introduces hand tools, blueprints, and basic machines. Emphasis placed on the completion of simple gauges and tools used in the gunsmithing trade. Upon completion, students should be able to produce from blueprints, tools, and fixtures for use in gunsmithing, using hand tools and basic machine set ups.

Food Service Sanitation/Safety – ServSafe Recertification Course

ServSafe® is a nationally recognized food safety and sanitation training program. It is designed for experienced food service employees and managers who need to comply with local and state health department requirements for food manager/food handler certification or recertification.

Basics of 3D Printing

This course will engage students to learn the basic knowledge and skills to operate and maintain any brand of 3D printer.  Students practice operations and print jobs on various brands. 3D printing is important in manufacturing, healthcare, construction, and other industries.

Small Engine Repair

This course is designed to provide the student with hands-on knowledge of engine rebuilding techniques to manufacturer’s specifications. The student will learn how to completely disassemble engines and check for manufacturer’s specifications and reassemble. Emphasis will be placed on the proper use of special tools and testing equipment.

Notary Public Education – offered monthly

The Notary Public course covers information for you to be able to apply for North Carolina Notary Public commissions. Participants must be at least 18 years of age, possess a high school diploma or equivalent, and speak and write English.

Defensive Driving – offered monthly

This National Safety Council’s Defensive Driving course allows qualified drivers the chance to earn a reduction on a traffic infraction upon completion.

Spanish For The Workplace

This course is an introductory understanding, speaking, reading, and writing Spanish. Emphasis is placed on pronunciation, parts of speech, communicative phrases, culture, and skills for language acquisition.

FREE PROGRAMS:

Basic Computer Skills for Today’s Job Search

Students will learn how to create and modify resumes, cover letters, and thank you notes in NCWorks Online, Microsoft Word, and other job search applications. Students are also introduced to creating simple documents in Excel, PowerPoint, and Publisher and the role of technology in the workplace. 

Introduction to Computer Skills for Today’s Job Search

This course will teach job seekers how to create and modify resumes, cover letters, and thank you notes in NCWorks Online, Microsoft Word and other job search applications; to create and manage an NCWorks Online account; and to use other computer technology in conducting job search activities. Basic keyboarding techniques will be reviewed. A brief introduction to Excel, PowerPoint and Publisher will be provided as well. 

Employability Lab

This open lab provides employability skills training for unemployed and underemployed adults. Receive career counseling to make appropriate decisions about careers preferences, assessment of current skill levels related to their career choice, and training in the skill area in which remediation is needed. A formal assessment will determine skill appropriateness and identify employment opportunities.
