Schools are almost out for the summer, and there are many opportunities for middle and high school students in Person and Caswell Counties to get out of the house, develop new skills, explore potential careers, and make lasting memories. Piedmont Community College (PCC) has 12 hands-on summer camps that offer a variety of engaging activities and educational opportunities for 6th-12th graders (ages vary by camp) that range in subjects like healthcare, technology, veterinary care, agribusiness, and welding.
“Summer break is the perfect time for teens and pre-teens to explore new interests, cultivate their talents, and develop valuable life skills,” said Dr. Barbara Buchanan, Vice President, Instruction, and Chief Academic Officer at PCC. “Our camps aim to provide a dynamic and engaging environment where these campers can discover their passions in a low-stakes and fun environment.”
PCC’s 2023 Summer Camps Include:
Summer Workshop in Mathematics (SWIM): For students looking for PCC math preparation for the fall semester, this camp is it. Join for an engaging, interactive, one-week summer math camp that dives into MAT 143 /”>MAT 143 -Quantitative Literacy, MAT 152 /”>MAT 152 -Statistical Methods I, or MAT 171 /”>MAT 171 -Precalculus Algebra. Breakfast and snacks will be provided each day. Available June 5-9 and July 24-28 on the Person County Campus and June 12-16 and July 24-28 on the Caswell County Campus.
The Wonderful World of Beauty: Take this chance to explore the world of cosmetology. Campers will dive into the science and art of skin, hair, and nails while practicing hairstyling, braiding, make-up, and skincare. Campers will finish the week by incorporating their new skills in worldwide beauty in a fashion show. Available June 12-15 on the Person County Campus.
Welding Camp: Gain hands-on welding experience while learning the difference between a MIG and a TIG weld. PCC’s instructor will also review terminology and equipment safety. Available June 7-9 on the Person County Campus and June 12-15 on the Caswell County Campus.
Animation and Game Creation Camp: Join this camp for a crash course in how games are made, the different skills and abilities used in the gaming and animation industry, and to create a playable game, demo, or animation. Available June 12-15 on the Caswell County Campus.
Pacer E-Sports Experience: For campers interested in E-sports, join a unique four-day event to participate in a 2-day, round-robin E-sports tournament and talk to game developers and players to learn about the e-sports industry. Available June 12-15 on both the Person County Campus and Caswell County Campuses.
Agribusiness Technology: In this camp, campers will learn about plant and animal science, discuss current trends in agriculture, visit local farms, and review the variety of agricultural opportunities within the region to gain perspectives on its importance to our community. Available June 19-22 on the Caswell County Campus.
Give Nursing a Shot: This camp will provide information and hands-on activities to introduce core nursing concepts in health and healthcare delivery. Campers explore a variety of careers that nurses play in healthcare, including basic nursing skills, infection control, simulation lab, the role of the nurse in community settings, health informatics, burns and wounds, and CPR. Available June 19-22 on the Person County Campus.
Build Dream into Reality with Mechatronics: This hands-on camp explores the world of mechatronics, which includes activities involving motors and controls, belt drives, chain drives, teamwork, hydraulics, pneumatics, basic electrical, and rigging. Campers also learn about potential career opportunities in this field. Available June 19-22 on the Person County Campus.
Catch a Criminal: A “learn-see-do” adventure that focuses on exploring through classroom discussions/demonstrations and hands-on experience. Explore mock crime scene investigations, processing fingerprints, footprints, and trace evidence such as hair and fibers. Campers will experience the roles of the police, courts, and corrections. Available June 19-22 on the Person County Campus and July 10-13 on the Caswell County Campus.
Vet Career Camp: This camp is for all animal lovers (farm and domestic). Campers will learn about the academic, financial, and emotional paths of veterinary school and explore multiple career paths in the veterinary industry. Available June 26-29 on the Caswell County Campus.
Exploring Health Careers: Try all kinds of careers in the health or medical field, such as nursing, nurse aide, medical assisting, phlebotomy, and more. Campers are introduced to these various careers through demonstrations, hands-on experiences, role play, and visits to local medical facilities. All campers receive a stethoscope and blood pressure cuff to take home. Available June 26-29 on the Person County Campus.
Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Camp: Engage in discussions and hands-on activities designed to provide the ability to help others in their greatest time of need. Learn life-saving measures such as CPR, treating for shock, stopping bleeding, positioning a person for better airway usage, immobilizing fractures, and more. Available July 24-27 on the Caswell County Campus.
