The Person County TDA has made a $20,000 donation to the Kirby Rebirth: Upstairs-Uptown project.

The Person County Tourism Development Authority (TDA) has expressed its support of the Kirby Rebirth: Upstairs-Uptown project with a pledge of $20,000. “With the economy being what it is, we need a good drawing card to bring people to Person County. The Kirby Cultural Arts Complex could be another destination for out-of-towners,” said Charley Bullock, TDA co-chairman. “We have so many talented people in Person County and a lot to show visitors, such as the Person County History Museum. We want to continue to develop those opportunities.”

“We greatly appreciate the Person County TDA’s strong support of the Kirby Rebirth project,” said Dr. Walter Bartlett, PCC President. “The TDA will be instrumental in developing these facilities as a local destination for our county’s visitors.”   The Kirby Cultural Arts Complex currently includes the Kirby Theater, a historic movie theater providing a large auditorium and stage for live entertainment and a new movie screen; the Kirby Gallery, offering art exhibitions, art sales, and spaces for individual music lessons; and the Kirby Learning Studios, renovated by Piedmont Community College (PCC) in 2010 to accommodate classes in its Associate in Fine Arts degree.   The Kirby Rebirth plans call for renovations to the upper floor of the Kirby, which originally housed offices. PCC is leading the campaign to raise $236,500 to bring the nearly 6,000 square feet of space up to code by providing an elevator, new stairs, and updated restrooms to make the space usable.

Possible uses for the renovated space include a large space for classes, meetings, and business retreats as well as arts spaces, galleries, and studio spaces that could be used by a visiting artist or resident artist.   The Person County TDA gift follows an initial gift of $50,000 in matching funds pledged by Roxboro Savings Bank.   PCC and Person County are working together to develop the Kirby Cultural Arts Complex, partnering with the Person County Recreation, Arts, and Parks Department and the Arts Council of Person County.

PCC is currently soliciting local groups and organizations as well as individuals for Kirby Rebirth support. For more information, to make a donation, or to arrange for a presentation, contact Elizabeth Townsend at or (336) 322-2102.
