Alumnus of the Year named
Deal wins first PCC ‘Alumnus of the Year” award
Piedmont Community College’s Alumni
Partnership has awarded its first “Alumnus of the Year” award to Shirley Deal,
Chief Executive Officer of Caswell Family Medical Center in Yanceyville. The
award was presented by Dr. Walter Bartlett, PCC President, at the Kirby Gallery
on April 7 during the opening reception for an exhibition of PCC student
In presenting the award to Mrs.
Deal, Dr. Bartlett said, “She has been an outstanding ambassador for the
College. She never misses an opportunity to tell people that she would not have
been able to get her education had it not been for PCC. She credits the College
with giving her the knowledge to have excelled in her profession. I cannot
begin to say enough about her support of the College through her advocacy and
Mrs. Deal was nominated by Kelly
Holder, Dean, Health Sciences and Human Services at PCC, who said: “Shirley is
tireless in her support of the College, especially our Nursing and Health
Sciences program. Since she graduated from the nursing program in 1993, she has
been a shining star for us.”
Mrs. Deal served many years as the
Chairman of the PCC Nursing Advisory Committee (now the Health Sciences and
Human Services Advisory Committee), where “her assistance and encouragement
have been invaluable,” Mrs. Holder said.
A strong support of the PCC Alumni
Partnership, Mrs. Deal has served as Partnership chairman since its beginning
in 2004 and “has worked hard to form a strong relationship between PCC and
alumni of the College,” said Holder.
She also provides financial support
to the College through the President’s Club membership both personally and
In addition to her service to PCC,
Mrs. Deal also volunteers for the Leasburg Fire Department, United Way, and
Partnership for Children and is active at Lamberth Memorial Baptist Church.
The “PCC Alumnus of the Year” award
was established to recognize one of the College’s outstanding alumni each year.
Nominees are required to have completed a degree, diploma or certificate at PCC;
demonstrate support to the College through monetary contributions and/or
volunteer services; have achievement in their profession; and have outstanding
service in civic/community affairs. Recipients receive a trophy and also
have their name engraved on a plaque that will be displayed on PCC’s Person
County Campus, showing subsequent winners as well.
The PCC Alumni Partnership was
established in 2004 to strengthen the relationship and bond with its alumni to
connect the College with its largest constituency group.
“Piedmont Community College alumni are
a valued resource in the College’s history and future,” said Patti Clayton, PCC
Alumni Partnership coordinator. The Alumni Partnership defines alumni as any
individual who has enrolled in and successfully completed a course (curriculum
or continuing education) or program of study (certificate, diploma or degree) at
