Getting the most from selling your small business or leaving it to your family… it is a quandary many small business owners face.

On Thursday, August 8, Piedmont Community College (PCC) will offer a free small business seminar titled, “Business Succession Planning” with business attorney Donna Ray Berkelhammer. This event will be held 6-8 p.m. at PCC’s Business Development Entrepreneurship Center on Main Street in Roxboro.

The largest asset of a small business owner is usually the business itself. Many do not realize with a little planning that they can sell their business to family, friends, employees or third parties rather than just shutting it down when they retire. This kind of business succession planning takes time.

In this free seminar, Berkelhammer will discuss the different types of succession plans and other important questions business owners may contemplate. Topics include:
• Sale to a partner or employee
• Sale to a third party
• Unplanned exit
• The best time to sell
• How to get top dollar
• How start the process
• Who should be on the team

Participants are sure to gain valuable information from the guest speaker. To register, or for additional information, contact Jody Blackwell at (336) 599-0032 or jody.blackwell@piedmontcc.edu. Registration is also available online at www.piedmontcc.edu/sbc (click seminar title and follow prompts).

About Donna Ray Berkelhammer:
“As a journalist who collected information inside courtrooms that impacted public policy, I became very frustrated at the “large chunks” that were incomprehensible for a layman to understand or use,” comments Berkelhammer. Because of this, she felt called to study our complex legal system so she could help people interpret and apply these abstract principles to their daily lives.

By collecting, analyzing and documenting important business information, Berkelhammer is able to liberate her clients from the legal entanglement that comes from being unknowledgeable and unprepared. As a business attorney, she delivers legal expertise that creates peace of mind and releases my clients to focus back on what they love about their business.
