Pacer Promise check presentation

On June 27, Piedmont Community College (PCC) and the Roxboro Area Chamber of Commerce hosted an event to showcase new campus renovations and announce the creation of the PCC Pacer Promise program.

At the event, Piedmont Community College President Dr. Pamela G. Senegal shared, “This new PCC Pacer Promise program, to be launched in fall 2020, will offer free tuition plus $200 for textbooks to qualifying students. This is a commitment to our communities, and to our students, of $150,000 over the next three years from the Lonnie and Carol Poole Family Foundation!”

Nancy Hall, Executive Director of the Lonnie and Carol Poole Family Foundation, attended the special announcement on behalf of the Poole family.

“It is with great pleasure that the Lonnie and Carol Poole Family Foundation is partnering with Piedmont Community College to support the PCC Pacer Promise,” Hall commented. “This partnership will enable students in Person and Caswell counties to pursue programs and certifications that encompass manufacturing, technology, agriculture industry, entrepreneurship, health sciences, and public safety administration.”

Programs of study included in this exciting new tuition free program are:
Accounting and Finance (available online)
Agribusiness Technology

Hall went on to say, “Mr. Poole had a very successful career as Founder of Waste Industries USA. He understands the importance of what he calls “Vocational Heroes,” those people who contribute to the workforce in skilled trades… He is a strong supporter of community college education, and recognizes the value of affordable, employable degree, and certification programs.”

Additional criteria for PCC Pacer Promise applicants:
• Current resident of Person or Caswell County (for at least 1 year);
• Graduate of Person or Caswell County high school, qualified home school, or PCC’s High School Equivalency Program in last 3 years;
• Earn a High School or College GPA of 2.5 or higher; and
• Enroll in a minimum of 12 credits in a Career & Technical Education program at PCC.

“Not only is this a significant opportunity for students who have recently graduated or will do so in 2020, but the PCC Pacer Promise program will have a substantial impact on local employers as more and more students will gain the skills needed to work in a variety of industries in our community,” stated Senegal.

Applicants will be required to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), as well as the current PCC Foundation Scholarship application.

“Completing the FAFSA and scholarship application are required so that we can ensure students are obtaining the financial assistance they qualify for and/or earn through merit based scholarships,” explains Allison Satterfield, Executive Director of the PCC Foundation. “The new PCC Pacer Promise program will review unmet need for those applicants and cover the remaining tuition.”

“With the help of the Lonnie and Carol Poole Family Foundation, the PCC Pacer Promise program will encourage more students to consider Career and Technical programs. Not only will a degree in these programs lead to employment, but the program has the potential to save a student over $5,000 if used for four consecutive semesters,” Senegal proudly shares. “We could not be more grateful to the Lonnie and Carol Poole Family Foundation for making this possible.
