Community members gathered to officially recognize the new partnership between Piedmont Community College (PCC) and TransTech at a Roxboro Area Chamber of Commerce Ribbon Cutting celebration at the Truck Driving Range located off Old Durham Road in Roxboro.

This newly offered program consists of extensive classroom, range, and behind-the-wheel instruction to prepare students for the Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Class A skills examination. Successful students also have the opportunity to earn their OSHA Forklift certification.

City of Roxboro Mayor Merilyn Newell spoke during the event, expressing her thoughts about positive job prospects available to the residents of PCC’s two service areas and neighboring communities.

“We are very proud of the initiative taken by Piedmont Community College and TransTech to respond to a critical need for qualified truck drivers not just in North Carolina, but throughout our nation. The ability to supply well-trained commercial truckers certified with their CDL license and additional forklift certification gives our students vital skills they can deploy in a variety of opportunities. There are many careers that can be realized from this skilled training and we are excited that they will receive this instruction right here at PCC in Roxboro.”

Person County Commissioner Kyle Puryear was also present at the event, sharing, “I am very excited about the impact that this will have on new career opportunities in our community. This is one of my many different visions that Piedmont Community College has made into a reality and their leadership and faculty should be commended. This partnership is a win-win for our community and Person County Government is very grateful for their forward thinking.”

During the event, Piedmont Community College President, Dr. Pamela Senegal, thanked the many individuals for their role in ensuring the success of the PCC program. She specifically recognized Eric Wright of TransTech, and his staff, for their support in assisting the College with getting the program ready for the community.

In addition, Town and Country Builders was instrumental in providing the grounds needed for a larger truck driving range to ensure training could take place in Person County.

Senegal also recognized donors to the project. “With the generous support of Sunrock and Jimmy Lewis and Sons, we were able to transform a former parking lot into an effective driving range,” she said, noting that Ronnie Goswick of Sunrock and Portia Lewis of Jimmy Lewis and Sons Grading were in attendance. “Our gratitude goes out to these donors and supporters of Piedmont Community College.”
