“I can’t say thank you enough for this scholarship funding. With this assistance, I will be able to further my education at PCC and follow my dream of becoming a nurse,” said Allison Warren, a 2017-18 Piedmont Community College (PCC) Foundation scholarship recipient.
College scholarships are available in many shapes and sizes – as well as from many different areas. The PCC Foundation and the College’s Financial Aid team regularly inform students of potential scholarship opportunities.
In fact, the PCC Foundation offers over 100 scholarships to students each academic year. Scholarship criteria varies and students are encouraged to complete the single online application to be considered for all qualifying funds. Most of the funding does require a minimum grade point average of 2.5 or higher and some awards are based on financial need while others are merit based.
The competition for summer and early fall scholarships will be held March 1 – March 30 and the online application is available at www.piedmontcc.edu/scholarship.
A second round of awards will be available for fall funding closer to the start of the semester. Spring scholarship applications are also available later in the year.
Three $1,500 scholarships are also awarded from the Piedmont Community College Board of Trustees. These scholarships are presented to the top-ranked graduating senior from Person High School, Roxboro Community School, and Bartlett Yancey High School who also submit a PCC Foundation scholarship application.
In addition, the PCC Alumni Partnership will award a $1,000 scholarship to a graduating high school senior from Person County and Caswell County. Funds for this scholarship are raised from sponsorships and ticket sales at Pickin’ by the Lake, a bluegrass festival held in September.
All PCC Foundation first round scholarship applications are reviewed by a committee and awarded in late April. Recipients are required to assist with one College event during the academic year.

In addition, students should visit the Financial Aid office at PCC to learn about additional local, state, and national scholarship opportunities. For example, the Golden Leaf Scholars program is funded through a grant from the Golden LEAF Foundation, a nonprofit organization established in 1999 to help transform North Carolina’s economy. The scholars program provides funds up to $750 per semester for curriculum students and up to $250 for occupational education students. The application deadline is April 9 and additional information can be found on PCC’s Facebook page, in PCC’s Financial Aid office, or at www.cfnc.org.
Students are also encouraged to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). To complete, students can visit www.fafsa.ed.gov or stop by PCC’s Financial Aid Office for assistance in completing the application. When completing or making edits to the FAFSA, students and parents are strongly recommended to utilize the IRS data retrieval option. Furthermore, applicants are asked to bring the following items with them when asking for assistance: 2016 federal tax returns (student’s, spouse’s, and/or parent’s), 2016 W-2 forms, and 2016 sources of untaxed income. The priority deadline is March 26 for the 2018-19 FAFSA application.
