A crowd of almost 200 people gathered in the shady courtyard of Piedmont Community College Friday to officially welcome Dr. Pamela Senegal as the school’s fifth president.
The Person High School Choral Ensemble opened the ceremony with a rendition of The Star-Spangled Banner, followed by two welcoming songs by PCC’s Child Development Center students.
Senegal, who began her role on July 1, came to PCC from Central Carolina Community College in Sanford, where she served as Vice President of Economic and Community Development. Before that, she held leadership roles at other community colleges in the Piedmont region.
“I pledge that every day, I will show up, and I will do my absolute best to make you proud that you’ve selected me as your president,” Senegal said to the audience after taking her oath of office. “I don’t take this leadership lightly.”
She earned undergraduate degrees in Political Science and Spanish, a master’s in Public Administration and a doctorate in Adult and Community College Education, all from N.C. State University.
She then explained the goals that she has set for PCC.
“Our institution will become even more integrated than we already are in Person and Caswell counties, so that we can identify new opportunities and transform the communities in which we are located,” she said. “We are also committed to addressing community issues. We’re not going to work in isolation, but we will be part of solutions.”
Members of the N.C. State Board of Community Colleges and the PCC Board of Trustees were in attendance for Friday’s installation, as well as PCC students and faculty, Person County locals and much of Senegal’s family.
Even her Delta Sigma Theta sorority sisters were in the crowd.
“We don’t just offer degrees,” Senegal said of PCC. “We are involved in every aspect of community development. Together, shoulder to shoulder, arm in arm, we can transform this community.”
