Piedmont Community College (PCC) has selected three Student Ambassadors for the 2017-2018 academic year. They are: Andrea Alcantara, Ayla Dunn, and Abigail Farmer of Roxboro. Alcantara, Dunn, and Farmer will serve as official student representatives of the College at community and school functions. They will also aid as greeters, conduct tours, and assist in other ways at College functions.
Andrea Alcantara graduated from Person High School (PHS) where she was involved in numerous activities, including Student Council. In fact, Andrea attended the N.C. Association of Student Councils Summer Leadership Workshop as a representative from PHS and was asked to serve as a Junior Counselor at the event the following year.
Andrea is currently enrolled in the Business Administration and Associate in Arts programs at PCC. Upon graduation she plans to transfer to a four year institution and study international business.
When asked about becoming an Ambassador at PCC, Andrea wrote, “I have always loved helping and volunteering. Serving other is my passion and would love to serve as a 2017-18 PCC Ambassador as a way of gaining experience for my future, and also to be a part of helping my community and representing PCC well.”
Roxboro Community School (RCS) graduate, Ayla Dunn, was also active while in high school and continued this tend during her first year at PCC. Through her studies in the Associate in Arts program, Ayla was asked to join Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society and earned special recognition at PCC’s Honor’s Convocation.
Ayla plans to transfer to North Carolina State University after graduation where she will double major in English and theater, earning a teacher certification in both areas.
Initially not excited about remaining in Roxboro to attend PCC, Ayla says she has come to love the College and is glad she stayed. “By enrolling in classes [at PCC] and working in Student Development, I have met some amazing instructors and administrators. I have learned about so many things that PCC and Roxboro have to offer.” Ayla looks forward to sharing her story with other potential students and “show them the hidden treasures that lie right in their hometown.”
Abigail Farmer is also studying in the Associate in Arts program at PCC. As a homeschool student, she took advantage of PCC’s Career and College Promise opportunities and has officially been a PCC student for two years. Abigail was interested in the PCC Ambassador program for three reasons: to share her event experience, grow as an individual, and help others understand life as a PCC student.
“When I first came to PCC at the age of sixteen, it was a little disorienting, the unfamiliarity of the place. It can make some student quite nervous to be new arrivals,” Abigail shared. “I would like to help new students feel more at ease. I could communicate to them my experience with classes, instructors, homework situation, and other students to help them not feel as nervous.”
After she graduates from PCC, Abigail plans on earning her bachelor’s degree in psychology and eventually enrolling in a University of North Carolina Paralegal program.
PCC Ambassadors are an honorary group of students who have been nominated, interviewed, and selected by faculty and staff to represent the College. Students must maintain a 3.0 GPA and they are awarded a scholarship from the PCC Foundation. In 2014, the Jacqueline Hall Moore Student Ambassador endowment was established to help support future Ambassadors. If you are interested in donating to the Student Ambassador program, contact the PCC Foundation team at (336) 322-2102.
