When beginning his new company, Sweetwater Springs Organic Farm owner Eli Humiston turned to Piedmont Community College’s (PCC) Small Business Center for advice. During the conversation, Mr. Humiston asked Director, Small Business Center/Customized Training Programs Jody Blackwell about assistance with logo designs. The two decided to take a short walk down Main Street to PCC’s Learning Studio in the Kirby Cultural Arts Complex (KCAC) to discuss the opportunity with Amy Levine, PCC Fine Arts Instructor.

The timing and student talent matched the needs of the request so a small group of PCC students worked with Mr. Humiston, gathering additional information about his business. The Fine Arts students learned that Sweetwater Springs Organic Farm is a Service-Disabled Veteran-Owned business that’s fairly new to Person County. When asked about his business, Eli Humiston commented, “I am growing a wide selection of organic vegetables, fruits, and herbs because I want to provide my family and friends with safe, healthy food for their bodies and minds. I enjoy being out here in the country and working with the land.”

To meet the needs of the community, Mr. Humiston created a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program. This weekly “Veggie Club” offers different plans for customers and includes freshly harvested veggies, herbs, and fruits, as well as fresh organic eggs.

Mr. Humiston also noted that his business, on Whitt Town Road in Roxboro, is a member of the Roxboro Area Chamber of Commerce, Carolina Farm Stewards Association, NC VetBiz, Northeast Organic Farmers Association, and Farmer Veteran Coalition.

The students began their design, working with the business owner and adding finishing touches until complete.

About PCC’s Associate in Fine Arts program
PCC’s Associate in Fine Arts (AFA) degree is designed for students who want to pursue a four-year degree in Art. In addition to completing core general education requirements, the program allows the student to select additional general education, pre-major, and elective courses in consultation with the targeted 4-year program.

Students not in the AFA program also have the opportunity to transfer art classes from PCC to their chosen 4-year institution. PCC representatives encourage students to verify that courses will meet the requirement of their selected 4-year institution as to how credits are applied as general education, major area, or electives.

Fall 2017 Associate in Fine Arts classes include:
• Art Appreciation (online)
• Art History (Person County Campus)
• Two-Dimensional Design (Learning Studio at Kirby Cultural Arts Complex)
• Three-Dimensional Design (Learning Studio at Kirby Cultural Arts Complex)
• Drawing I & II (Caswell County Campus and Learning Studio at Kirby Cultural Arts Complex)
• Painting I & II (Learning Studio at Kirby Cultural Arts Complex)
• Digital Photography I & II (Learning Studio at Kirby Cultural Arts Complex)
