Biowork Orientation begins May 1 at Piedmont Community College (PCC). Participate in this free orientation to learn if a career in BioWork, a course that brings together the basics of manufacturing technology and the fundamentals of science – two essential needs for competent, entry-level technicians working in biotechnology, pharmaceutical manufacturing, and chemical manufacturing, is for you!

This 30-hour orientation course will be held May 1 – 16, 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. at the College’s Workforce Training Center located at 303 S. Morgan Street in Roxboro. This free program provides you an overview of the BioWork course, including requirements to complete the course. Participants will also have the opportunity to learn Blackboard (the College’s online course delivery system), get study skills for future success, and earn a North Carolina Career Readiness Certificate.

If becoming a BioWork Process Technician interests you after the orientation, a full 16-week course is available at PCC from May 22 – September 11. Classes will meet each Monday and Tuesday from 2-4 p.m. on the Person County Campus. Class participants will be accepted on a first-come, first-serve basis with a maximum of 16 students.

The 128-hour BioWork course provides marketable skills for manufacturing technicians in the Biotech field. Bioprocess technicians are involved in the making of products such as antibiotics, bleach, cosmetics, deodorant, detergents, paint, plastics, Post-It notes, shampoo, soft drinks, and wine.

Units of instruction include: Your New Job; Working Safely; Quality; Measuring Process Variables; Transforming Matter (Chemistry); Learning the Nuts & Bolts; Controlling the Process; Sterile Processes (Microbiology); Growing Living Cells (Cell Biology); and Job Seeking Skills.

Eligible students who complete the Orientation to BioWork course may receive financial assistance to cover the following costs to take the BioWork Process Technician course: $180 registration fee; $1.25 accident insurance; and $138.78 (including tax) textbooks.
