Piedmont Community College’s (PCC) Business Development and Entrepreneurship Center (BDEC) is offering a Beginning Clay and Beyond course where students will create a variety of forms including dishes, pots, and whistles. This course will be held on Thursday evenings, March 2 – April 6, 5:30–8:30 p.m. at PCC Learning Studio at the Kirby Cultural Arts Complex on North Main Street in Roxboro.
Though pottery wheels will be available for use during class sessions, the main focus will be on hand building. Each person is encouraged to work at their own level while acquiring new skills and techniques. The focus of this class will be hand building techniques such as coiling, pinching, and the use of slabs of clay to produce both figurative and functional forms.
Each class will begin with a demonstration and then students will be given time to practice and explore, thus making their work personal. Different methods of surface decoration will also be covered.
The Beginning Clay and Beyond course is $150 and includes 25 pounds of clay, the use of studio glazes, and the firing of your work. The instructor’s tools will be available for use during class and can also be purchased at the PCC Bookstore. An old towel and apron are highly recommended.
Payment of the registration fee is required before the course starts.
