Future Piedmont Community College (PCC) students will benefit from a gift given to the PCC Foundation from Roxboro Savings Bank. “It is with great privilege and pleasure that Roxboro Savings Bank (Board and Staff) grant a $10,000 gift to the Roxboro Savings Bank Scholarship Endowment with the Piedmont Community College Foundation. The gift was made in memory and in honor of two former Presidents/Chairmen of the Roxboro Savings Bank’s Board of Directors,” read the accompanying letter.

“Members of the Roxboro Savings Bank Board of Directors wanted to do something special in memory of William [Bullock] who served as chairman for approximately 4 years,” shared Tommy Wagstaff, current President of the Bank’s Board. “We also wanted to honor Al [Cole] for his service as chairman for the 9 years after Mr. [Bill] Walker retired. Al led us through the economic down turn and did so many things to move us forward at the bank as far as going primarily from a home loan organization into a commercial outfit.”

Mr. William Bullock served Roxboro Savings Bank as a Board member for 24 years. Mr. Alfred F. Cole, Jr. has served as a Board member for 47 years.

Roxboro Savings Bank first created a scholarship to assist students attending Piedmont Community College in 1985. In 2003 funds were added to the original endowment in memory of J. C. “Bill” Left to right: Charley Bullock, wife of William Bullock - former Roxboro Savings Bank Board of Directors; Tommy Wagstaff, President, Roxboro Savings Bank Board of Directors; Dr. Walter Bartlett, President, Piedmont Community College; Al Cole, Member, Roxboro Savings Bank Board of DirectorsWalker who retired from the Bank in in 1985 and was instrumental in creating the original endowment. Mr. Walker also served as President and Chairman of the Roxboro Savings Bank Board from 1993-2002.

“We thought that it was such a wonderful idea to put more money into the endowment because that would allow the PCC Foundation to offer more scholarships or larger scholarships,” added Wagstaff.

Roxboro Savings Bank’s Executive Vice President and CEO Jane Long added, “We are humbled by the opportunity to help someone who just needs a chance. For us, that’s what it’s all about. And to do it on behalf of two gentlemen that we admire so much makes it even sweeter for us. The Bank is truly indebted to both of these gentlemen for their tireless service, not only to our organization, but to our community.”

The letter from Roxboro Savings Bank also shared why the PCC Foundation was selected for this generous gift. “Piedmont Community College is a pillar in this community, making a positive difference in the lives of so many by offering a wide variety of curriculum programs designed to prepare students for the workforce or transfer to a four-year college or university….right here at home! Likewise, the PCC Foundation provides critical financial support to enable students to complete their educational goals, oftentimes when those individuals have nowhere else to turn, giving them an opportunity for a rewarding career. Our blessing comes in knowing that lives right here in this community will be changed as a result of just being given a chance. So, we recognize that our gift is, indeed, an investment that will pay dividends for generations to come!”

Dr. Walter C Bartlett, PCC President, accepted the donation on behalf of the PCC Foundation Board of Directors. “Having a community leader like Roxboro Savings Bank honor two community-minded board members by contributing to the PCC Foundation confirms that the work of the Foundation is valuable to the citizens of Person County,” he remarked. “We consider it a great privilege to be part of this special recognition and will continue to provide opportunities for students interested in strengthening their skills for a better future.”

Since its creation, the Roxboro Savings Bank Scholarship Endowment has assisted 30 deserving students with their educational journey at PCC.
