For many Piedmont Community College (PCC) students, achieving their educational goal is dependent on financial assistance and other student support programs that help them along the way. They often benefit from the gifts of others to help ensure their success, the affordability of their college education, and their quest for excellence.
In fact, the PCC Foundation awarded 136 scholarships to deserving students for the fall and spring semesters this academic year. Recent scholarship recipient Crystal Peacock is one such student. A mother of three, Crystal shared, “I have had a long journey working to complete my nursing degree. I had to stop school for a while after having my third child, then began slowly taking classes part-time. Eventually I found myself at PCC and accepted into the Associate Degree Nursing Program. It has been hard work and I am thankful for the opportunity.”
Crystal was not sure she would finish the program due to her financial situation. She also did not qualify for federal financial aid. After learning she was awarded the C.J. White and Vera Moore White scholarship, Crystal wrote “I am pleased to report that thanks to the scholarship I will be able to complete my final semester and graduate in May 2017!”
The PCC Foundation also supports faculty and staff grants, professional development, student ambassador awards, and an incentive program for high school equivalency graduates. Some of the grants that were funded this year include:
• Graduation attire for high school equivalency graduates to be re-used on a yearly basis, encouraging more students to participate in the graduation ceremony
• Equipment for Nurse Aide training and the new Cardiovascular Technician program
• Supplemental tools to complement PCC’s free Career Coach integrative platform available at http://www.piedmontcc.edu/careercoach
• STEM related educational opportunities through for the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) Club
If you would like to make a difference for PCC students both now and in the future, and support new and growing programs at the College, consider a tax-deductible gift to the PCC Foundation. Giving opportunities include:
Gifts of Cash
Consider a gift of cash. This is often the easiest gift and is usually fully deductible for donors who itemize deductions. Checks dated before Dec. 31, 2016, will be deductible on your 2016 tax returns and can be mailed to PCC Foundation, Post Office Box 1101, Roxboro, NC 27573.
Gifts of Appreciated Securities
Giving gifts of appreciated stock bonds or other securities allow you to make a substantial gift while also offering several benefits for you, the donor:
• Avoid capital gain tax on the appreciated value.
• The amount of charitable income tax deduction is equal to the full fair-market value of the stock upon transfer.
• It is easy to do—simply provide your broker or financial adviser with the following wiring instructions.
If you wish to donate securities over a holiday in which the PCC Foundation offices are closed in December, please contact Ron Bremer at Edward Jones: Wiring Instructions: DTC ID #0057 FBO: Piedmont Community College Jones Account #245-11061-1-2 Telephone: (336) 597-3600 Address: Edward Jones 104 North Main Street Roxboro, NC 27573
If you own stock that has gone down in value, you may be able to sell the stock, make a gift from the cash proceeds and apply the realized loss on your 2016 tax return.
Gifts from IRA, Pension Fund, and 401(k) plan
IRAs, pensions, 401(k) plans, and other retirement savings plans are potentially the most tax burdened asset that one may own, often subject to both income and estate tax. A gift to the PCC Foundation could help with these tax liabilities while also supporting education in our community.
Donors who are 70.5 years of age or older may directly transfer funds from their IRA, meeting the minimum distributions requirement and potentially avoiding income-tax penalties.
Other Gifts
Other giving options include gifts from a will or Living Trust and life income type gifts such as charitable remainder trusts.
We encourage you to consult with your tax adviser while using the PCC website at www.piedmontcc.edu/Foundation for more information when making a donation. You may also contact Patti Clayton, Program Coordinator for the PCC Foundation, at (336) 322-2105 or Patti.Clayton@piedmontcc.edu.
