After 10 years of selling Kirby vacuum cleaners, Lorenzo Jay decided that he needed to obtain a more stable and consistent job to support his family.

In February 2016, Jay enrolled and successfully completed Certified Production Technician (CPT) training at Piedmont Community College (PCC). This course provides training for national certification in the areas of safety awareness, manufacturing processes, quality practices, and maintenance awareness. Jay was able to attend using funds provided by the NCWorks Job Driven Initiative which paid his registration and testing fees.

From there, while searching for a job, Jay took the “Introduction to Computers for Job Search” Human Resources Development (HRD) course offered at the College. This course assisted in increasing Jay’s employability skills.

Jay then obtained funding through Project Skill-Up Pathways, sponsored by the North Carolina Tobacco Trust Fund Commission, and enrolled in PCC’s Certified Logistics Technician (CLT) training to further improve his chances of finding employment.

PCC’s CLT program provides training in warehouse distribution functions, such as shipping and receiving, inventory control, blueprint reading, and other logistic operations. Jay completed the CLT course in May and immediately enrolled in the OSHA Forklift and OSHA 10 courses, earning certifications in all areas.

On August 15, six months after beginning at PCC, Jay accepted a position at GKN Driveline in Roxboro as a material handler making $13.61 per hour. “Having the opportunity to take the Workforce Development courses has helped me to get off of food stamps and helped my overall financial being,” commented Jay.

The next Certified Logistics Technician course offered at PCC will begin on November 14. The class will be held Mondays – Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. To register or for more information, contact the Workforce Development Team at (336) 599-2156.
