The Piedmont Community College (PCC) Foundation has named five PCC instructors and two PCC staff members recipients of its annual Excellence Awards for 2016.
Mark Duncan, Chair of the PCC Foundation, first thanked faculty and staff members. “Piedmont Community College is a great asset to both Person and Caswell Counties. Working with business, industries, and individuals, PCC improves lives. Without you — those teaching in the classroom, those helping current and future students find their way through their educational journey, and those sharing the many opportunities available at PCC — the College would not exist. So thank you, all of you, for doing what you do to make our community a better place to live, work, and learn!”
Faculty Excellence Awards are based on the individual’s commitment and demonstration of increased learning through various methods, including involvement in real-world tasks. Duncan recognize:
• Allen Hines, Instructor, Workforce Development-Corrections Education, for his work with incarcerated students participating in the “Chilling Out Stress Reduction Challenge”. This project taught students how to increase awareness of stressors, employ stress reduction strategies, and work together toward a common goal. In addition, students used IRelax technology to track their progress.
• Angel Solomon, Adjunct Faculty member, who worked with her Writing and Inquiry ( ENG 111 ) students to create a Daily Wellness Journal. Encouraging students to inquire and write about topics that personally affect and benefit them, this assignment was meant to increase student confidence in their writing ability. It also individualized the learning process and increased student participation.
• Fayecha Smith, Instructor, Cosmetology, for her work with the Contemporary Hair Designs class and teaching the latest trends and fashions in the hair industry, including cutting, coloring, up dos, and wig making. Students participated in (and won awards at) state-wide student competitions on Fantasy Hair, Evening of Elegance, Haircutting, and many more.
• Carolyn Steele, Instructor and Coordinator, Early Childhood Associate, worked with the Exploration Activities ( EDU 251 ) class on the effective use of cell phones in instruction with a focus on motivating students to learn more while using a device they feel is imperative to their lifestyle.
• David Wehrenberg, Instructor and Curriculum Coordinator, Industrial Systems Technology and Mechatronics Engineering Technology, for his determination to increase the number of engaged and motivated students. In an effort to meet each students’ learning style, various skills, including verbal, logical, visual, kinesthetic, and interpersonal, were used in teaching exercises.
Two staff members were also recognized for their commitment to the College, excellent performance on the job, and willingness to share time and expertise through service to the institution, its students, and the wider community. Duncan presented staff awards to:
• Lisa Ashley, Executive Administrative Assistant to the Vice President, Continuing Education/Internal Records Coordinator, for her outstanding commitment to excellence. The hallmark of Ashley’s character is one of unselfish devotion to helping others be the best they can be. She is committed to assisting students, faculty, staff, and community members to achieve their goals and supporting the advancement of Piedmont Community College.
• Beth Townsend, Director, Public Information and Marketing, for increasing marketing information and activities for curriculum and continuing education programs, incorporating traditional and new social media aspects. Townsend continued her efforts to assist the PCC Foundation during transition, as well. Her service to the community was also acknowledged.
All awards were presented during the College’s Fall Convocation in the Barnette Auditorium on the Person County Campus. This is the 18th year the PCC Foundation has presented the Excellence Awards.
