Parents who want to earn their high school equivalency diploma and learn skills to help their child succeed in school are encouraged to enroll in Piedmont Community College’s ACE, Adults and Children in Education, class at Earl Bradsher Preschool on South Morgan Street in Roxboro. Registration is underway through February for this free class that meets Monday- Thursday, 8:30 a.m. – 2 p.m. PCC obtained a grant from the NC Community College System to be able to offer this family-focused project for free in Person County.

Motheread® is a weekly component of ACE to provide participants with instruction about reading to their pre-school children and how to utilize activities in the home related to the books’ theme, setting, characters, etc. At the end of each weekly Motheread® session, adult learners receive a free copy of the children’s book to use at home and to begin or add to a children’s library at home.

Cortney Morrow, instructor/coordinator for ACE, provides instruction in the subjects required for GED® testing. The academics of reading, writing, social studies, science, and math are also taught in relation to family/home life and related to adult learners’ plans to enter the workforce or continue their education. In addition, participants learn computer literacy skills using laptops, have family focused group discussions, and explore careers and colleges to create a vision for themselves beyond high school completion.

“The National Family Learning Center (Louisville, KY) has research that states that a mother’s level of education is one of the most important factors contributing to a child’s success in school. Through ACE, parents are helping themselves and their children succeed in education,” said Debra Harlow, Dean, Adult Basic Skills program at PCC and supervisor of the ACE class.
