Students in Piedmont Community College’s (PCC) Cosmetology program were big winners in the recent SkillsUSA competition. The competition was held at the North Carolina State Fair for the first time this year and drew participation from five community colleges. The event offered two areas of competition for students: Fantasy Hair on a live model and Total Evening of Elegance on a mannequin.
PCC students, including both beginner and advanced students, entered the Evening of Elegance competition and swept the competition by winning first through sixth place awards for their elegant up-do styles. The styles featured a variety of hair techniques, complemented with jeweled hair pins, feathers, and other hair ornaments.
Winners included: first place, Jennifer Seamons, beginner; second place, Courtney Street, advanced; third place, Stephanie Toone, beginner; fourth place, Danelle Jackson, advanced; fifth place, Leslie Puryear, advanced; and sixth place, Madeline Erdner, beginner. Beginner students Brittney Davis and Natalie Kincy also represented PCC. The students were trained for the competition and supervised by Fayecha Smith, PCC Cosmetology instructor.
“PCC students received a personal invitation from the State SkillsUSA organization to participate in the state-wide SkillsUSA competition in April 2015,” said Deanna Ouzts, PCC Cosmetology program director. “Our students represented PCC well in the recent competition, and it was a real confidence builder for them. We are so excited about the quality of their work and their recognition in this competition.”
PCC offers diploma and certificate programs in Cosmetology in fully-equipped salons on both its Person County Campus in Roxboro and its Caswell County Campus in Yanceyville. Both day and evening programs are available. Students may begin the program while they are still in high school. Students, under the supervision of instructors, also offer cosmetology services for the public. For more information about PCC Cosmetology programs, contact Deanna Ouzts at (336) 322-2241.
