Piedmont Community College (PCC) has selected two Student Ambassadors for the 2014-2015 academic year. They are: Michael L. Farmer of Semora and Brenda Hunt-Moore of Timberlake. The students will serve as official student representatives of the College at community and school functions. They will also serve as greeters, conduct tours, and assist in other ways in College functions.
Farmer, who is pursuing a degree in Medical Office Administration/Health Care Management at PCC, earned a Bachelor’s degree and a Master’s degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He was an English teacher for 16 years, teaching English Composition and Rhetoric at UNC Chapel Hill for four years and English as a Second Language (ESL) in Saudia Arabia and the United Arab Emirates for 12 years. Farmer came to PCC to prepare for a career change. He would like to earn a Medical Coding certificate, work as a medical coder in a health care facility, and possibly pursue a second master’s degree in Health Care Management.
“I have a different background than most PCC students,” said Farmer. “Because I already have a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree and also have college teaching experience, I think I can use that experience to benefit students from different backgrounds, especially our University Transfer students.”
Hunt-Moore is enrolled in PCC’s Medical Assisting program and also pursuing a career change. She came to PCC as a displaced worker after her manufacturing job ended. She was interested in Medical Assisting became she had previously worked as a Certified Nursing Assistant. She serves as co-chairperson of the Community Cancer Awareness Group and is active in her church. Following her graduation, she hopes to work in the medical assisting field and possibly continue her studies in that area.
“Serving as a PCC Ambassador gives me a platform to speak for the students and to assist students,” said Hunt-Moore. “I know how difficult it is to come back to school after being out for so long. I think students who are like I was need someone to talk to and to reassure them as they adjust to college.”
The PCC Ambassadors are an honorary group of students who have been nominated, interviewed and selected by faculty and staff to represent the College at special events on campus and in the community. They receive scholarships administered through the PCC Foundation, sponsor for the Ambassadors program.
