Students in the Piedmont Community College Cosmetology program won several hair styling awards in a recent competition held at Vance-Granville Community College (VGCC) Civic Center in Henderson. They competed against students from Halifax Community College and VGCC’s Main, South and Franklin County campuses.

Student stylists chose from among three categories to demonstrate their skills and creative flair: Fantasy, Elegant Updo, and April Fool’s. In the April Fool’s category, students worked on mannequins rather than on live models. They were required to use a kit of items that were a surprise to them and to fashion hairstyles on the spot.

Jeremy Poole from PCC was the first place winner in the Elegant Updo category. PCC students swept the Elegant Updo category by winning all three places. Winners were Courtney Street, first; Leslie Puryear, second; and Kourtney Baker, third.

The winners received trophies and hair styling products and implements as prizes. Professional hair stylists served as judges for the competition. Ervin Davis of Durham served as master of ceremonies and commentator as the models in the Fantasy and Elegant Updo competitions walked a runway to show off their designs.

PCC offers Cosmetology programs on both its Person County Campus and its Caswell County Campus. The programs are also open to high school students.
