Piedmont Community College instructor Lisa Cooley has been named a winner in the 2014 SoftChalk Lesson Challenge. Her submission, “ MAT 155 Statistical Analysis – What’s the Message?” received an honorable mention in the eLearning software provider’s contest.

Cooley, who also serves as director for PCC’s Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP), based her winning entry on the College’s QEP named “QR4U,” which centers on incorporating quantitative reasoning across College curricula.

Cooley holds both a B.S. degree and an M.S. degree from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. She has been a math instructor at PCC since 1991 and led the College in the development and implementation of its QEP as part of its reaffirmation of accreditation process last year. She currently directs instructor training, implementation, and follow-up of the QEP.

The Lesson Challenge takes place each year and provides an opportunity for educators to be recognized for the innovative and engaging content they create. All entries are submitted publically on SoftChalk Cloud by their author, where they are then assigned and reviewed by a panel of judges. The judges, who are leading online educators, score the plans using a rubric with specific categories including lesson creativity, professionalism, interactivity, and how well the lesson reinforces student learning. This year’s contest drew 117 entries, making it the most competitive challenge yet, according to SoftChalk.

Cooley’s lesson, along with other winning entries, is now available for use by other educators. To view the winning lessons, go to www.softchalk.com.
