Despite a misty rain, the mood was definitely celebratory Thursday afternoon at Piedmont Community College.

In yet another nod to the coronavirus, the college held an unusual graduation ceremony Thursday afternoon (May 21), inviting graduates to drive through the campus to collect their diplomas.

About 40 graduates took the college up on the offer. One by one the cars, parked in the main student parking lot, wheeled through the driveway in front of the G Building where they were met by trustees and faculty.

As each student’s car drove past, several faculty and trustee board members, parked in their own cars, flashed their lights, honked their horns, greeting each student.

Nearly every student was accompanied in their car by family members or friends filling the front and back seats. In most cases, someone in the car was manning a cell phone, capturing the event for posterity on their own video.

The entire ceremony took only about 45 minutes, but it was a happy experience for both graduates, their families and the faculty and staff.

Each graduate received their diploma from PCC President Pamela Senegal, and a yard sign they could display at home to let passersby know there was a graduate in the house. They also received other gifts from the PCC Alumni Foundation.

Thursday’s drive-through ceremony was an effort by the college to make the traditional graduation season complete in a timely way.

The college will hold a formal graduation ceremony for all students in December at the Kirby Theater.
