Start Date: September the 6th

End Date: October the 28th

Weekly Class Meetings: Every Tuesday and Thursday

Time: 6:45pm-9:00pm

Veterinary Assistant I is an entry-level course that introduces students to the veterinary industry through the lens of a veterinary assistant.

Students learn the impact of the human animal bond on the veterinary staff, clients and patients. Safety and sanitation procedures for the veterinary practice facility are discussed. Students gain an overview of general animal care in the veterinary setting including accurate measurement of patient vital signs and proper restraint methods of animals. Students develop an understanding of the veterinary assistant’s role during a veterinary emergency.

The course is 124 hours total with 84 hours asynchronous on Blackboard and 40 hours of face-to-face instruction.

The 40 hours includes 36 hours of instruction on the Caswell County Campus (Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:45 pm – 9:00 pm) and 4 hours at the Animal Protection Society of Caswell County.

Students must complete 2 sessions at the APSCC on Wednesdays from 1:30 pm – 3:30 pm. Due to the small size of the animal shelter, only 2-3 students will attend the Wednesday session each week. Each student is required to complete at least two sessions at the shelter.

Students shall pass this course in order to progress to Veterinary Assistant II.

This course is the first in a series of continuing education courses to prepare students to become a Certified Veterinary Assistant (CVA) Level 1 through the Texas Veterinary Medical Association (TVMA), after successful completion of training and documentation of at least 500 clinical hours (200 laboratory/classroom hands-on hours and 300 under the supervision of a licensed veterinarian or certified veterinary technician).

It is the responsibility of the student to complete and document the required 500 hours.
