Trainer: Dr. Terri Phoenix is the Director of the LGBTQ Center at UNC-Chapel Hill.

Safe Zone Information:

The Safe Zone program is designed to create a network of visible allies to people who identify as part of the 2SLGBTQIA+ campus community. These trainings provide information and resources related to sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression. Safe Zone trainees develop:

  • A deeper awareness of personal ideas, stereotypes, and assumptions related to gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, intersex, queer and asexual (2SLGBTQIA+) individuals
  • An increased comfort level in addressing concepts and language regarding 2SLGBTQIA+ communities with the university community and with individuals
  • An increased awareness of services on campus that support 2SLGBTQIA+ and allied individuals
  • A network of community and campus staff, faculty, and students to support people of all sexual orientations, gender identities and gender expressions on campus.

1:00 PM – 1:30 PM – FREE Lunch provided

1:30 PM – 5:00 PM – Training (Breaks will be built in)

  • Allyship and what does it mean
  • Basic language and terms
  • LGBTQ+ and Two Spirit
  • Common challenges students face
  • How to have class discussions around LGBTQ+ topics and how to create inclusive curriculum
  • Action/Resources

Trainees will receive

  • Professional Development
  • A Certificate for completing the training
  • A PCC branded SafeZone sticker to display in your office or outside your door
