On October 24, 2015, 57 North Carolina Community College students competed in the 2nd Annual Fantasy Hair and Makeup and Total Kimberly Bowes (right) took third place in the Total Evening Elegance competition while Madeline Erdner (left) earned fifth place for Piedmont Community CollegeEvening Elegance Contests at the North Carolina State Fair. Seven Community Colleges were represented as students demonstrated their skill and creativity in these two contests.

During the Fantasy Hair and Makeup Contest, students were tasked with creating unique designs and fantasy concepts on live models. Students were judged on the overall creativity, makeup application, hair design, costuming, and the use of props and prosthetics. There were designs inspired by Alice in Wonderland, the Walking Dead, changing seasons, the medieval period and more.

Student competing in the Total Evening Elegance Contest had the challenge of creating an elegant hairstyle and makeup scheme to a cosmetic mannequin. The hairstylists exhibited exquisite detail and intricacy in their designs. The styles students created could go from the red carpet to a state dinner at the White House.

It was a very close contest and judges had a difficult time determining the top 5 in each of the two categories. However, the winners were determined and over $1,000 worth of hair and make-up equipment was given out along with $660 in cash prizes.Sarah Smith (right), with Model Brittany Buchanan, completed in the Fantasy Hair and Makeup category.
