Progress Energy Mayo Plant employees award PCC scholarship
at Progress Energy’s Mayo Plant facility who have been working hard to raise
funds to endow a scholarship at Piedmont Community College (PCC) had the
opportunity to meet their first scholarship recipient recently. PCC student
Johnnetta Hamlett was introduced to the Mayo Plant employees at a barbeque
fundraiser held at the plant to benefit the scholarship fund.
is a Person County resident who earned her GED® credential from PCC in 1995. She
began taking curriculum classes in the late 1990s but left before earning a
degree. Returning to PCC in 2005, she continued to work in manufacturing, take
classes and raise her children as a single mother. She is currently studying
Medical Office Administration and recently lost her financial aid. Hamlett only
has a few classes remaining to complete her degree so that she can obtain a
more secure position in the medical field.

said Hamlett. “Thanks to their generous support, I am able to continue working
on my Medical Office Administration degree. I really want to thank the
employees at Progress Energy for allowing me to have this opportunity. This
scholarship means a lot to me. Without it I would not have been able to return
to school. I can’t thank them enough.”

employees this year, raised $850 for the scholarship endowment funds.
Organizers expressed special thanks to Billy Wooding for his donation of food
and to the employees who helped prepare and serve the meal.
employees have raised $8,875 towards their $10,000 scholarship endowment goal.
In addition, they separately funded Hamlett’s $500 scholarship for the
2012-2013 academic year.
