PCC receives Project Skill-Up grant
Piedmont Community College (PCC) has
received a Project Skill-Up grant to assist Person and Caswell County residents
who have been negatively affected by the decline in the tobacco industry. The
$25,000 grant will provide educational assistance to students who are seeking
to update their work skills through the Project Skill-Up program offered at
PCC. The grant was received through the N.C. Community Colleges and was funded
by the N.C. Tobacco Trust Fund Commission.
Qualified students may receive up to
$500 to be used for tuition, books, and fees. Fees for transportation costs
will not be available. Angie Webb, Director, Human Resource Development (HRD) programs
at PCC, expects most Project Skill-Up students will participate in the
College’s new Workforce Certification Academy. This program is the only one in
North Carolina to offer the entire Certified Production Technology Technician
program, a program that provides training for national certification in the
areas of safety awareness, manufacturing processes, quality practices, and
Other students may also opt for other short-term
training offered at PCC in programs such as EMT, Paramedic Training, Certified
Nurse Assistant or other programs.
The latest grant is the third Project Skill-Up
award received by PCC. The first, received in 2009, was for $50,000 and was
followed by a second award in the amount of $40,000. To date, the College’s
Project Skill-Up program has served 130 individuals. Of these, 97 completed
programs, and 63 were employed.
In its Project Skill-Up program, PCC works with
Job Link Career Centers, the Kerr-Tar Workforce Development Board, two Chambers
of Commerce, Cooperative Extension Services, and other community agencies for
outreach and recruitment. HRD/WIA staff serve as recruiters and make enrollment
referrals of individuals who meet the criteria of having been displaced by the
decline in the tobacco industry. PCC hopes to serve 40 students as the result
of its latest Project Skill-Up grant.
