Tuition Waiver

Proof of Eligibility. To obtain a waiver, individuals must establish proof of eligibility as a member of an authorized group or organization. The NC Legislature authorizes NC community colleges to waive the registration fees of authorized public safety personnel for selected/eligible training courses.

 

  1. Waiver for students taking Employability Skills courses and who meet one of the following criteria: Unemployed, Working and earn wages at or below 200% of the federal poverty level guidelines, Working and eligible for Federal Earned Income Tax Credit (FEIT), and/or Received notice of pending layoff.
  2. Waiver for Department of Correction full-time employees who work only with inmates are exempt from paying registration fees for applicable courses. Applicable courses would be those courses which enhance the correction employees in the performance of their duties.  
  3. Waiver for Public Safety personnel enrolled in courses that enhance the performance of their duties are exempt from paying registration fees.
  4. Waiver for AHS, GED and ABE students taking courses in these areas are exempt from paying a registration fee when enrolled in these courses. See High School Equivalency testing fees for cost of tests.  
  5. Waivers are available to the surviving spouse and children of a law enforcement officer (including sheriffs), firefighter, volunteer firefighter or rescue squad worker who was killed or permanently disabled as a direct result of a traumatic injury sustained in the line of duty (including both active service and training for active duty).
  6. Registration fees for Corporate & Continuing Education courses vary with the type of course.
  7. All Personal Interest/Self-Support courses are not fee waived.
  8. Students are responsible for buying books, tools, uniforms, kits and/or supplies.
  9. Students may purchase accident insurance to cover class activities for $1.25 per term. Ask at time of registration.
  10. An eligible Senior Citizen as defined by the NCCCS and G.S. 115D-2(2) is eligible to take courses that are FTE generating. G.S. 115D-2(2).
    1. A person shall be allowed to audit a class under this section only on a space available basis.
    2. “Audit” means to enroll in a course section for self-enrichment and without the opportunity to receive a grade, academic credit, continuing education units, or certificate of completion.
    3. Students shall pay to audit courses consistent with the provisions of 1E SBCCC 1000.
