If you want to enroll in Piedmont Community College’s (PCC) BioWork training course, you need to do so right away since the orientation class begins May 12.

PCC’s Continuing Education program will offer BioWork, a course that brings together the basics of manufacturing technology and the fundamentals of science – two essential needs for competent, entry-level technicians working in biotechnology, pharmaceutical manufacturing, and chemical manufacturing.

A 30-hour Orientation to BioWork course will be offered May 12 through May 21 from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday (class will not meet May 14) at the College’s Business Development Entrepreneurship Center located at 105 N. Main Street. The course will include an orientation to Blackboard, the College’s online course delivery system, an overview of the BioWork course, requirements to complete the course, study skills for success, Internet KeyTrain, North Carolina Career Readiness Certificate and CASAS assessments. The $120 registration fee is waived for unemployed or underemployed students. Individuals who meet eligibility criteria and successfully complete the orientation course may receive financial assistance to take the BioWork Process Technician course. Orientation is an optional course if you are not seeking financial assistance. The financial aid may also include travel reimbursement back and forth to class.

The 9-week BioWork course will start June 3 and end Aug. 5, 2014. Class will meet each Tues. and Thurs. 5-9 p.m. on the Person County campus and includes 64-hours classroom instruction and additional online instruction. Class will not meet July 3, 24 or 31. Class participants will be accepted on a first-come, first-serve basis with a maximum of 16 students.

The 128-hour BioWork course provides marketable skills for manufacturing technicians in the Biotech field. Bioprocess technicians are involved in the making of products such as antibiotics, bleach, cosmetics, deodorant, detergents, paint, plastics, Post-It notes, shampoo, soft drinks and wine.

Units of instruction include: Your New Job; Working Safely; Quality; Measuring Process Variables; Transforming Matter (Chemistry); Learning the Nuts & Bolts; Controlling the Process; Sterile Processes (Microbiology); Growing Living Cells (Cell Biology); and Job Seeking Skills.

Eligible students who complete the Orientation to BioWork course may receive financial assistance to cover the following costs to take the BioWork Process Technician course: $180 registration fee, $1.25 accident insurance and $130 estimated textbooks.
