Registration is currently underway through Jan. 15 for Piedmont Community College’s BioWork course. BioWork is a Continuing Education course that brings together the basics of manufacturing technology and the fundamentals of science – two essential needs for competent, entry-level technicians working in biotechnology, pharmaceutical manufacturing, and chemical manufacturing.

The 16-week BioWork course will be held Saturdays from Jan. 18 through May 10. Class will meet each Saturday from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. on the Person County Campus in Room F209 and includes 64-hours classroom instruction and additional online instruction. Class will not be held Easter weekend. Class participants will be accepted on a first-come, first-serve basis with a maximum of 16 students.

The 128-hour BioWork course provides marketable skills for manufacturing technicians in the Biotech field. Bioprocess technicians are involved in the making of products such as antibiotics, bleach, cosmetics, deodorant, detergents, paint, plastics, Post-It notes, shampoo, soft drinks and wine.   Units of instruction include: Your New Job; Working Safely; Quality; Measuring Process Variables; Transforming Matter (Chemistry); Learning the Nuts & Bolts; Controlling the Process; Sterile Processes (Microbiology); Growing Living Cells (Cell Biology); and Job Seeking Skills.
