If you want to enroll in Piedmont Community College’s BioWork training course, you need to do so right away since the orientation class begins Aug. 1.

BioWork is a continuing education course that brings together the basics of manufacturing technology and the fundamentals of science – two essential needs for competent, entry-level technicians working in biotechnology, pharmaceutical manufacturing, and chemical manufacturing.

A 30-hour Orientation to BioWork course will be offered Aug. 1-Aug. 13 from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. each Monday and Wednesday and 1-4 p.m. each Tuesday and Thursday at the College’s Workforce Training Center located at 303 S. Morgan St., Roxboro. The course will include an orientation to BlackBoard (the College’s online course delivery system), an overview of the BioWork course, requirements to complete the course, study skills for success, Internet KeyTrain, North Carolina Career Readiness Certificate and CASAS assessments. The $120 registration fee is waived for unemployed or underemployed students. Individuals who meet eligibility criteria and successfully complete the orientation course may receive financial assistance to take the BioWork Process Technician course. Orientation is an optional course if you are not seeking financial assistance. The financial aid may also include travel reimbursement back and forth to class.

The 10-week BioWork course will start Aug. 24 and end Dec. 14. Class will meet each Saturday from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. on the Person County Campus in Room F209 and includes 64-hours classroom instruction and additional online instruction. Class will not be held Nov. 30. Class participants will be accepted on a first-come, first-serve basis with a maximum of 16 students.

The 128-hour BioWork course provides marketable skills for manufacturing technicians in the Biotech field. Bioprocess technicians are involved in the making of products such as antibiotics, bleach, cosmetics, deodorant, detergents, paint, plastics, Post-It notes, shampoo, soft drinks and wine.

Units of instruction include: Your New Job; Working Safely; Quality; Measuring Process Variables; Transforming Matter (Chemistry); Learning the Nuts & Bolts; Controlling the Process; Sterile Processes (Microbiology); Growing Living Cells (Cell Biology); and Job Seeking Skills.

Eligible students who complete the Orientation to BioWork course may receive financial assistance to cover the following costs to take the BioWork Process Technician course: $180 registration fee, $1.25 accident insurance and $130 estimated for textbooks.    For more information, contact Jeanette Godsey at (336) 322-2133, jeanette.godsey@piedmontcc.edu or Debra Seamster at (336) 599-6622, or debra.seamster@piedmontcc.edu.
