Over 450 students are eligible to receive degrees, diplomas and certificates during Piedmont Community College’s 43rd commencement exercises on Friday, May 17. The ceremonies will begin at 7 p.m. and will be held at the Person High School stadium on Ridge Road, Roxboro.

Sen. Mike Woodard of Durham, who represents the NC Senate District 22 (Person, Caswell, and Durham counties), will be the speaker. Woodard, a Democrat, is serving his first Senate term. His committee assignments include the Finance, Commerce, Education, and Health Care committees.

Sen. Woodard is a graduate of Duke University with degrees in economics, political science, and non-profit management. He is a long-time administrator with Duke University and the Duke Health System and is currently employed in the Financial Services division where he is involved in the management of Duke’s computer-based financial system.

Also participating in the ceremony will be Dr. Walter C. Bartlett, PCC President; Maggie Whitt, chair, PCC Board of Trustees; the Rev. Raymond Pearce, pastor, Leasburg United Methodist Church; Mike Dossett, PCC Vice President, Instruction and Student Development; and Dr. Doris Carver, Vice President, Continuing Education. James Woody, a member of the State Board of Community Colleges, will present the Academic Excellence Award to Diana Gonzalez, a member of the 2013 graduating class. Tom Bowen, who was recently named PCC Alumnus of the Year by the PCC Alumni Partnership, will also present remarks.

Parking for graduation will be available in all PHS parking lots, and stadium entrances on both sides of the school will be open. Handicapped parking will be available in both the north and south lots, and golf carts will be available for transporting people who need assistance. Carver Drive will be closed to traffic from 6:30-8:30 p.m. on May 17 to accommodate PCC’s graduation. In case of rain, graduation will move into the PHS gymnasium, and admission will be ticket only. Tickets will be provided to the participating graduates for distribution.
