Adam Shepard, author of “Scratch Beginnings: Me, $25, and the Search for the American Dream,” will speak at Piedmont Community College (PCC) on Tuesday, March 26. PCC’s Learning Resources Center (LRC) Book Club, in collaboration with the PCC Student Government Association, will present the event at 11:30 a.m. in Building S, Room 100. The event is open to the public. Refreshments will be served.

A 2006 college graduate, Shepard decided to conduct his own social science experiment to see if “the American dream” is still alive. He started from scratch, setting out with a sleeping bag, $25, and only the clothes on his back. He could not use any of his college or family contacts. He lived in homeless shelters and took day jobs while working towards his goal: to save $2,500, buy a car, and live in a furnished apartment within one year. His book chronicles how he accomplished that and more in just 10 months.

Shepard will discuss is experiences and sign copies of his book during the PCC event. For more information, contact Gretchen Bell, Dean, Learning Resources Center and Distance Education at PCC, at (336) 599-1181, ext. 2154 or Gretchen.Bell@piedmontcc.edu.
