Piedmont Community College’s Continuing Education program will offer BioWork, a course that brings together the basics of manufacturing technology and the fundamentals of science – two essential needs for competent, entry-level technicians working in biotechnology, pharmaceutical manufacturing, and chemical manufacturing.

BioWork will be a hybrid offering with 64-hours classroom instruction and the other half delivered through BlackBoard, the College’s online course delivery system. A 16-week course will be offered this spring starting Jan. 19 and ending May 11. The BioWork Process Technician course will meet each Saturday from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Class will not be held on March 30. Class participants will be accepted on a first-come, first-serve basis with a maximum of 16 students.

This 128-hour course brings together the basics of manufacturing technology, the fundamentals of science, and the job-seeking essentials needed to provide marketable skills for manufacturing technicians in the Biotech field. Bioprocess technicians are involved in the making of products such as antibiotics, bleach, cosmetics, deodorant, detergents, paint, plastics, Post-It notes, shampoo, soft drinks and wine.

Units of instruction include: Your New Job; Working Safely; Quality; Measuring Process Variables; Transforming Matter (Chemistry); Learning the Nuts & Bolts; Controlling the Process; Sterile Processes (Microbiology); Growing Living Cells (Cell Biology); and Job Seeking Skills.   The course will be offered on PCC’s Person County Campus. The $176.25 cost covers registration and accident insurance. The textbooks are $120.
