Piedmont Community College’s Alumni Partnership’s “Alumnus of the Year” award display plaque received two additions this year when the Partnership tapped both April Duckworth and Carla Johnson for the recognition. The award was presented by Dr. Walter Bartlett, PCC President, at the Kirby Gallery on April 3 during the opening reception for an exhibition of artwork by students in PCC programs. Both Duckworth and Johnson are employed as family therapists-parent educators with the Person County Government Cooperative Extension Office.

Duckworth received an Associate in Applied Science degree in Human Services Technology at PCC in 1995 and a Bachelor of Science degree in social work from Shaw University in 2004. She has been employed in her current role since 1995.   Duckworth is a nationally-certified Parents as Teachers Parent Educator, North Carolina Certified Level II Parent Educator and an Intensive Family Preservation Social Worker.  She is involved with the National Parenting Education Network, Parents as Teachers, Prevent Child Abuse North Carolina, Intensive Family Preservation Services, NC Association for the Education of Young Children, and the Person County United Way. Duckworth continues to support PCC through her involvement with the College’s Human Services program where she works with students on projects, speaks to classes and promotes the program through written and oral communication.  She also strongly supports the College through her involvement as a PCC Alumni Partner.

Johnson completed her degree in Human Services Technology at PCC in 1996.  She also went on to earn her Bachelor of Science Degree in Social Work from Shaw University in 2004.  Johnson has been employed as a Family Therapist- Parent Educator with the Extension Office since 1996.    Johnson also  supports PCC through her service to the Human Services Program, where she speaks to classes, works with student projects,  and writes promotional pieces for the program. She is also a strong supporter of the PCC Alumni Partnership.    She is a nationally-certified Parents as Teachers Parent Educator, NC Certified Level II Parent Educator, and an Intensive Family Preservation Social Worker.  Her professional and civic affiliations include the National Parenting Education Network, Parents as Teachers, Prevent Child Abuse North Carolina, Intensive Family Preservation Services , NC Association for the Education of Young Children, and the Person County United Way.

Both Duckworth and Johnson were nominated for the honor by PCC instructor Sheri Narin, who taught them at PCC. “It is difficult to talk about one without also talking about the other,” Narin said. “They have worked together 16 years and have demonstrated a strong partnership. I believe the strength of their professional partnership has helped families see how people can work together to build a stronger foundation. They truly are a team.”

This year was the second year the PCC Alumni Partnership has named the “Alumnus of the Year.” The 2011 recipient, Shirley Deal, serves as the Partnership’s chair and introduced the award presentation by  reviewing the award criteria. She said nominees are required to have completed a degree, diploma or certificate at PCC; must demonstrate support to the College through monetary contributions and/or volunteer services; must have achievement in their profession; and should have outstanding service in civic/community affairs.   Recipients receive a personal trophy and also have their name engraved on a plaque that will be displayed on PCC’s Person County Campus, showing subsequent winners as well.

The PCC Alumni Partnership was established in 2004 to strengthen the relationship and bond with its alumni to connect the College with its largest constituency group. The Alumni Partnership defines alumni as any individual who has enrolled in and successfully completed a course (curriculum or continuing education) or program of study (certificate, diploma or degree) at Piedmont Community College.
