Piedmont Community College’s Continuing Education program will offer BioWork, a course that trains individuals for careers as bioprocess technicians in the biotechnology, pharmaceutical, and chemical manufacturing industries.  

BioWork will be a hybrid class with 64-hours classroom instruction and the other half delivered through BlackBoard (the College’s online class-delivery software). A sixteen-week course will be offered starting Jan. 14 and ending May 12. The BioWork Process Technician course will meet Saturdays from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Class will not be held Feb. 25 or April 7. 

Class participants will be accepted on a first-come, first-serve basis with a maximum of 16 students.   This 128-hour course brings together the basics of manufacturing technology, the fundamentals of science, and the job-seeking essentials needed to provide marketable skills for manufacturing technicians in the Biotech field. Bioprocess technicians are involved in the making of products such as antibiotics, bleach, cosmetics, deodorant, detergents, paint, plastics, Post-It notes, shampoo, soft drinks and wine.  

Units of instruction include: Your New Job; Working Safely; Quality; Measuring Process Variables; Transforming Matter (Chemistry); Learning the Nuts & Bolts; Controlling the Process; Sterile Processes (Microbiology); Growing Living Cells (Cell Biology); and Job Seeking Skills.   The course will be offered on the Person County Campus. The $176.25 cost covers registration and accident insurance (textbooks estimated cost $120).
