Shirley Deal wins first PCC ‘Alumnus of the Year” award
Piedmont Community College’s Alumni Partnership has awarded its first “Alumnus of the Year” award to Shirley Deal, Chief Executive Officer of Caswell Family Medical Center in Yanceyville. The award was presented by Dr. Walter Bartlett, PCC President, at the Kirby Gallery on April 7 during the opening reception for an exhibition of PCC student artwork.

In presenting the award to Mrs. Deal, Dr. Bartlett said, “She has been an outstanding ambassador for the College. She never misses an opportunity to tell people that she would not have been able to get her education had it not been for PCC. She credits the College with giving her the knowledge to have excelled in her profession. I cannot begin to say enough about her support of the College through her advocacy and advisory roles.”   Mrs. Deal was nominated by Kelly Holder, Dean, Health Sciences and Human Services at PCC, who said: “Shirley is tireless in her support of the College, especially our Nursing and Health Sciences program. Since she graduated from the nursing program in 1993, she has been a shining star for us.”

Mrs. Deal served many years as the Chairman of the PCC Nursing Advisory Committee (now the Health Sciences and Human Services Advisory Committee), where “her assistance and encouragement have been invaluable,” Mrs. Holder said.   A strong support of the PCC Alumni Partnership, Mrs. Deal has served as Partnership chairman since its beginning in 2004 and “has worked hard to form a strong relationship between PCC and alumni of the College,” said Holder.

She also provides financial support to the College through the President’s Club membership both personally and professionally.   In addition to her service to PCC, Mrs. Deal also volunteers for the Leasburg Fire Department, United Way, and Partnership for Children and is active at Lamberth Memorial Baptist Church.

The “PCC Alumnus of the Year” award was established to recognize one of the College’s outstanding alumni each year. Nominees are required to have completed a degree, diploma or certificate at PCC; demonstrate support to the College through monetary contributions and/or volunteer services; have achievement in their profession; and have outstanding service in civic/community affairs. Recipients receive a trophy and also have their name engraved on a plaque that will be displayed on PCC’s Person County Campus, showing subsequent winners as well.   The PCC Alumni Partnership was established in 2004 to strengthen the relationship and bond with its alumni to connect the College with its largest constituency group.

“Piedmont Community College alumni are a valued resource in the College’s history and future,” said Patti Clayton, PCC Alumni Partnership coordinator. The Alumni Partnership defines alumni as any individual who has enrolled in and successfully completed a course (curriculum or continuing education) or program of study (certificate, diploma or degree) at Piedmont Community College. For more information about becoming a PCC Alumni Partner, please contact Patti Clayton by e-mail at or by phone at (336) 599-1181.
