Alumnus of the Year Award

Sharon Womack named PCC "Alumnus of the Year" for 2015

Recognized for her professional achievements, community service, and continued support of Piedmont Community College, Sharon Womack was named the 2015 Alumnus of the Year by Piedmont Community College’s Alumni Partnership. The ceremony took place at the Kirby Gallery on April 10 during the PCC Student Art reception sponsored by the PCC Foundation.

Womack graduated from Piedmont Community College in 1981 with an Associate in Applied Science Degree in Early Childhood Education. She continued her education at North Carolina Central University, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in Elementary Education in 1985 and a Master of Education in 1991.

Working with Early Intervention and Family Services of Person County for 30 years, until her retirement in 2004, Womack served as teacher, educational program coordinator, and administrator as Director of Therapeutic Preschool.

As her educational and professional experiences flourished, Womack never forgot about Piedmont Community College. She became an active member of the PCC Alumni Cabinet in 2004 where she served as secretary. Volunteering for events has brought her great joy as it provides the opportunity to speak with current PCC students.

"I accept this award as a beautiful symbol representing my volunteer efforts with the Alumni Partnership since inception. I provide this service because I value Piedmont Community College as an important institution of higher learning for Person County and surrounding areas. It worked well for me and provided a good foundation as I continued my studies at North Carolina Central University. I am grateful to be named the Alumnus of the Year,” says Womack.

In addition to touching the lives of pre-school children and college students, Womack reaches the heart of many others through her writing and other community service. To date, Womack has published two books and is a contributing writer for The Courier-Times. In addition, she has served on numerous organizational boards, including the Person Area Transportation System (PATS), Child Care Referral and Resource (CCR&R) and Smart Start. Dr. Walter Bartlett, PCC President, remarked as he presented the award to Deal..."She has always been an outstanding ambassador for the College. She never misses an opportunity to tell people that she would not have been able to get her education had it not been for PCC. She credits the College with giving her the knowledge to have excelled in her profession. As already noted, her community service is outstanding.
