In celebration of National Literacy Month, Piedmont Community College’s Adult Basic Skills program joined the Person County Public Library to sponsor a Celebrity Read for preschool children at the public library. Roxboro Fire Chief Kenneth Torain read a book on a Thanksgiving theme to the children and used a turkey sounding device to illustrate the sound of the turkeys in the story.

Afterwards, he talked with the parents in attendance about fire safety, fire drills, and tools they can obtain from the fire department to mark windows to indicate where children would be in their homes in case of fire. He told parents that Person County has one of the highest per capita burn rates of children in NC.

PCC’s Family Literacy class, Adult and Children in education (ACE) also attended the Celebrity Read, had an orientation and tour of the public library, and obtained library cards so that they can use the library’s resources for their children and themselves before returning to Earl Bradsher Preschool to resume their adult education classes.
